Bias cutting fabric refers to cutting fabric at a 45-degree angle to the straight grain of the fabric. The straight grain of the fabric refers to the lengthwise and crosswise threads, which run parallel and perpendicular to the selvage of the fabric, respectively. When you cut along the bias, you are cutting diagonally across the fabric, creating a bias grain.
