Bias Cutting

Bias cutting fabric refers to cutting fabric at a 45-degree angle to the straight grain of the fabric. The straight grain of the fabric refers to the lengthwise and crosswise threads, which run parallel and perpendicular to the selvage of the fabric, respectively. When you cut along the bias, you are cutting diagonally across the fabric, creating a bias grain.

The bias grain has some unique characteristics compared to the straight grain. Cutting fabric on the bias gives it more stretch and drape, allowing it to conform to curves and contours more easily. This is because the bias grain has more give and flexibility due to the diagonal orientation of the threads.

Cutting fabric on the bias has a few distinct characteristics and advantages:

  1. Stretch and drape: When fabric is cut on the bias, it has inherent stretch and flexibility. The diagonal line allows the fabric to mold and drape smoothly around curves and contours, making it ideal for creating garments with a flowing or fitted silhouette.

  2. Bias binding: Bias cutting is commonly used to create bias binding, which is a narrow strip of fabric used to finish edges or add decorative trims. The bias-cut strips can be folded and sewn around curves, such as necklines and armholes, without puckering or distorting the fabric.

  3. Visual interest: Cutting fabric on the bias can add visual interest to a garment or project. The diagonal lines create a distinctive pattern, especially when using striped or patterned fabrics.
